VICTOR, Idaho — Firefighting crews are working to suppress a fire that cropped up off of Teton Pass yesterday, Tuesday Aug. 7.
The blaze, dubbed the Bear Canyon Fire, is located about a mile southeast of the Moose Creek Ranch, on the Wyoming side of the border, in Caribou-Targhee National Forest (CTNF). Its size is estimated at between 0.25 and 0.5 acres, with a 0.1 acre spot fire outside the main burn area.
The Forest Service is taking point on firefighting efforts, assisted by Teton County Fire & Rescue (TCFR). About 10 people from the two agencies are currently enlisted to fight the fire, according to a spokesperson from TCFR.
“Much of the work is extremely laborious involving chainsaws and handline construction,” TCFR shared on its Facebook page Wednesday. “Crews are expecting to have a day of difficult work with the location of the fire and the amount of heavy fuels,” the agency said in another post.
A helicopter is on scene spraying water to try to douse the fire, which is reportedly visible from Teton Valley, with smoke also in view from Idaho 33 on Teton Pass.
TCFR notes that the area remains under a red flag warning today, meaning that fires can spark quickly and easily.
