JACKSON, Wyo. — Being on the Snake River and its headwater tributaries is part of the Jackson Hole summer culture. River-based recreation soothes the soul. This summer the hot weather has driven more and more people to the river for a cooling swim, a relaxing float, to pursue trout or just enjoy some quiet time with water flowing by.
With recreation at an all-time high, it’s important to remember the river is a public space and provides solace to different users in different ways. There is plenty of space for us all to recreate respectfully and responsibly.
Following the River Code presented by the Snake River Fund will help us all avoid an angry August:
- Dress for Success: Wear an appropriately fitted life jacket.
- Don’t Cramp the Ramp: Rig boats away from the ramp. Clear people, boats and gear away from the launch zone rapidly so that others may launch/land safely.
- Spread Out: It’s a big river. Respect other users, control your craft and remember that your party shouldn’t be someone else’s headache.
- Be Aware: Be sure to know what’s going on upstream and downstream while floating and at boat ramps. Be prepared to maneuver away from other users and obstacles. Always be ready to respond to the unexpected.
- Leave No Trace: It’s up to our river community to keep our waters rubbish-free. Pick up after yourself and, if possible, leave the waters cleaner than you found them.
The waters of western Wyoming bring joy to many. Honoring the River Code allows everyone to enjoy the river and respect the environment.
