JACKSON, Wyo. — Teton County School District No. 1 (TCSD) announced on Thursday that James Howell, a 24-year educator with the district, has been named assistant superintendent of education.
Most recently, Howell has served as the Wilson Elementary School (WES) principal. TCSD stated in a social media post that he will shift into the new role over the course of the fall while the search for a new principal is underway. He will remain on site at WES until his replacement is hired and will work with the new hire to assist in a smooth transition for students, families and staff. Howell and TSCD Superintendent Scott Crisp plan to work closely with the Wilson school to offer support and leadership throughout the changeover.
“I am honored to accept the position of Assistant Superintendent of Education at Teton County School District No. 1,” Howell said in a statement. “After 15 years as a classroom teacher, I have had the privilege of serving students, families, and colleagues at all three levels of our district; high school, middle school, and elementary. These experiences have shaped my belief in the power of public education and strengthened my commitment to the students and community we serve. Public education is my passion, and I am excited to continue serving TCSD No. 1 in this new capacity. I look forward to supporting and celebrating the incredible educators across our district, building strong connections, and working collaboratively to foster growth and create meaningful opportunities for every student to experience success.”
In his new position, Howell will be responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of various educational components. He will work alongside principals and TCSD leadership to implement the district’s Strategic Plan. His job will also focus on improving consistency across the school system and prioritizing meaningful student experiences.

I appreciate the leadership James has provided at WES, [Colter Elementary School], and [Jackson Hole Middle School] during his tenure at each school, and I am confident that his leadership will benefit students and educators throughout TCSD going forward.”
