JACKSON, Wyo. — Curious about the proposed Justice Center?

Join representatives from Teton County and architecture firms at two public meetings on Tuesday, Sept. 17, to learn all about the Specific Purpose Excise Tax (SPET) ballot item.

At each meeting, the team will present the history of the project and the potential future of the building. The public is invited to ask questions and provide feedback.

The County’s announcement of the meetings included the following background information:

The courthouse was built in the 1960s and is the oldest County facility. Six years of research and studies show that the aging building has severe deficiencies in energy efficiency, security, ADA accessibility and structural integrity. During the studies of the courthouse, it was found that the Teton County Detention Center had similar deficiencies. Design teams determined that the most economically efficient option to resolve issues with both facilities was to build an entirely new building that housed both the courthouse and detention center, making it a Justice Center.

The SPET initiative of $88,000,000 would be used to help fund the Justice Center. SPET is a voter-approved 1% sales tax on most goods and services in Teton County, excluding groceries and unprepared food. If the tax revenue collection rates remain constant, it would take approximately 4.5 years to acquire the funds (2029).

Meetings will be held at noon and at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the Teton County Library’s auditorium. See more about the Justice Center on the County’s website.
