JACKSON, Wyo. — With Teton County Assessor Melissa Shinkle retiring from the position at the end of her term, two candidates have emerged to run for the job.
Democrat Ashlee Nader is challenging longtime valley resident and accountant Norman Mellor III, who is running as a Republican, in November’s general election. Nader has served as a Teton County elections and marriages deputy clerk for three years.
Nader told Buckrail that she has lived in Teton County for 25 years, and has been a property owner in the county for 20 years. She worked in operations within the local hospitality industry for 22 years, and she has owned and run two small businesses.
The main priorities of Nader’s campaign are to support the experienced staff already in the County Assessor’s office, maintain fair and accurate assessments, and strengthen communications with property owners. Through her experience with elections in the County Clerk’s office, she has already worked alongside the State of Wyoming, which plays an active role in county property assessments.
“I respect the work that’s been done under the current leadership of Mel Shinkle,” Nader said. “I would focus on building that success while ensuring the office remains transparent, efficient, and responsible to the public.”
Nader credits her hospitality background with strong customer service and problem-solving skills. She believes her experience in local government has given her an understanding of public service, accountability and regulatory compliance.
“I think working with a diverse range of people has taught me to listen carefully and address concerns respectfully and remain professional in challenging situations,” Nader said.
