AFTON, Wyo. — Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) has reported a new wildland fire burning in the region.
The Porcupine Fire, originally estimated at 6 acres and now down to 4 acres, was discovered just before 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, on the Greys River Ranger District. BTNF notes that the fire is located near Smoot, off Cottonwood Creek Road, approximately 0.75 miles into Porcupine Creek. The cause of the fire is unknown.
The blaze is currently burning in grass, sage and light timber fuels. Smoke will likely be visible in the area. BTNF asks that smoke in the area not be reported. No fire-related closures in the area have been reported. Fire danger in BTNF is considered “high.”
“Crews are putting in good work, and line is currently about 80% complete,” BTNF wrote on social media.
A type 3 helicopter, fire engine and 25 local personnel are on scene actively working to suppress the fire. BTNF states that resources are also being shared from the Horse Fire.
