JACKSON, Wyo. — Learn best practices for bear spray use with the help of a remote-controlled charging bear simulator known as “Robobear.”
Robobear will appear in Pinedale and in Jackson this weekend at bear spray training and giveaway events hosted by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) to raise awareness about safety while recreating in bear country.
The remote-controlled tool is used at bear spray trainings to simulate a surprise encounter situation, allowing participants to try their hand at spraying the charging bear. He tops 20 mph, while a live grizzly can reach speeds of up to 30 mph and higher.
“These partnership events provide a great opportunity for people to practice and become proficient with bear spray and to promote safety as many folks prepare for the fall recreation and hunting season,” Bear Wise Wyoming Coordinator Mark Aughton said in the event announcement. “We hope this effort continues to raise awareness and remind those recreating in bear country to be prepared.”
WGFD partners with the Safari Club International Foundation, American Bear Foundation and Shoshone National Forest to put on these free events. The agencies will give away approximately 100 cans of bear spray at each event on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Pinedale event will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the WGFD Pinedale Regional Office (432 Mill St.).
The Jackson event will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the National Elk Refuge and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center (532 N Cache St.).
