JACKSON, Wyo. — The suspect in custody following Tuesday night’s active shooter incident was arraigned Wednesday afternoon, according to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO).

Jackson resident Charlie Lucas faces charges of attempted murder, false imprisonment, reckless endangerment and property destruction.

According to TCSO’s press release, dispatch received a 911 call on Tuesday at 8:23 p.m. from a family ranch stating that a family member was possibly intoxicated and discharging a firearm. The man — later identified as Lucas by TCSO — was reportedly made upset by a phone call, and then began wielding two handguns.

“When another family member attempted to leave the house and enter her vehicle, the man followed her and discharged numerous rounds into her vehicle,” the release said. “Bullets shattered the window and went through the headrest. She was ultimately unharmed.

The man’s girlfriend emerged from the house after hearing gunshots and got into her own car, after which the man shot her driver’s side front and rear tires to prevent her from leaving. She fled the vehicle and hid in a nearby pasture.

Following this, the man got into his own car and drove southbound on Spring Gulch Road, where at 8:59 p.m. he encountered a Jackson Police Officer who had blocked all lanes of traffic with his patrol car following the 911 call.

A standoff ensued for two hours and 17 minutes, during which law enforcement officers negotiated with the man, who reportedly threatened to kill himself repeatedly and “discharged his two guns numerous times into the hillside.”

Lucas was eventually apprehended and taken into custody.
