MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — A powerful wind and rainstorm swept through Yellowstone National Park (YNP) on Monday, July 3, causing damage to the Park’s Lake Village area.

No one was hurt during the storm, but several hundred trees were blown down throughout the area including around the Lake Hotel, Lake Lodge, Lake Medical Clinic, Lake General Store, Lake employee housing areas and Bridge Bay Campground and Marina. Several buildings and vehicles were hit by falling trees, including part of the Lake Yellowstone Hotel. That building, as well as three nearby cabins, were evacuated and remain closed for repairs.

The hotel and clinic lost commercial power for about 24 hours following the storm. Most of the area’s power was restored by Tuesday night, although Bridge Bay Campground and Marina is still without power. Cleanup efforts are expected to continue through the next week.

“Monday night’s storm event hit the Lake area very hard,” Superintendent Cam Sholly said in a press release. “The National Park Service team and our partners quickly stabilized the situation and got recovery efforts started immediately.”

Currently, there are no temporary closures in the area. Visitors are encouraged to keep track of local weather.
