JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Park officials elevated the fire danger rating for Yellowstone to ‘high,’ effective immediately.
The move comes as a new fire was detected on July 20 just northwest of the border of the park in the Gallatin National Forest.
The lightning-ignited Bacon Rind Fireis burning in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness area about two miles west of Highway 191, near mile marker 42, between Bacon Rind and Snowslide Creeks. It is estimated at about 25 acres with several hotspots jumping out into a 50-acre perimeter.
The fire is not threatening any structures at this time, however is near the Yellowstone National Park boundary. Fire officials from the Custer Gallatin National Forest and Yellowstone Park continue close coordination efforts.
Smoke from the fire is visible from Highway 191 and the fire poses no threat to the highway at this time. If you do see smoke from the Bacon Rind Fire please remember to stay focused on driving until you can find a safe place to pull over.
Currently, there are no fire restrictions in the park. Campfires are permitted only in fire rings at campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. Campfires must be extinguished and cold to touch after use.
