DRIGGS, Idaho — Teton County (Idaho) Fire & Rescue is suspending all burn permits for the rest of the summer.

In a Monday social media post, Fire & Rescue stated that burn permits issued through the agency will be halted starting on July 1. The permits will be suspended until Oct. 1, then Fire & Rescue will reevaluate conditions. According to the post, outdoor cooking and recreational fires in approved fire pits are still allowed. Conditions will continue to be monitored. Fire danger in Teton County, Wyoming, is currently high.

“Due to Teton County experiencing extreme drought, and expected above normal fire potential for the months of July, August and September we are making this decision out of an abundance of caution,” wrote Teton County Fire & Rescue. “We are expecting fire activity in [southeast] Idaho to continue to pick up in coming weeks.”

To the east, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) has implemented a fire ban on all Wyoming Game and Fish Commission land within Fremont County. Fireworks are always prohibited on Commission land. Under this ban, the following acts are also prohibited:

  • Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire charcoal grill, coal or wood burning stove.
  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.

“With dry conditions across Wyoming, fire possibility remains high, and the effects of wildfire can devastate habitat for wildlife on these properties and private lands in our Access Areas,” WGFD Habitat and Access Supervisor Kevin Howard said in a statement. Visit the WGFD website to learn more about which Fremont County lands are under the fire ban.
