YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — The snowy weekend in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) led to mayhem on park roads, according to a news release by the park on Monday morning.

Park roads south of Mammoth remain temporarily closed due to “multiple weather-related traffic incidents,” YNP said. Multiple internal park roads closed to vehicles on Saturday night in anticipation of wintery weather. All roads south of Mammoth closed on Sunday, when YNP staff “responded to more than 30 motor vehicle accidents, stranded vehicles, and slide-offs across various areas of the park.”

Roads will remain closed until staff assesses conditions to determine when they can safely reopen, YNP stated.

“This closure will allow road crews time to safely clear snow and address icy conditions,” YNP’s release reads. “Additional heavy snow and high winds were forecast to continue though the evening, further impacting visibility and road safety.”

The one park road that remains open is the one connecting the North and Northeast Entrances, between Gardiner and Cooke City, Montana.
