MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — Yellowstone National Park announced Wednesday that the fire danger parkwide is now moderate.
According to the park, there are no active wildland fires or fire restrictions in Yellowstone. Campfires continue to only be permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and at some backcountry campsites.
On July 28, a small wildland fire was discovered about five miles south of the Park’s Northeast Entrance Road, 0.5 miles east of the Lamar River Trail in Lamar Valley.
Those who do choose to build a fire in Yellowstone or elsewhere, are reminded to never leave a campfire unattended. When extinguishing a campfire, the fire pit should be cool to the touch before leaving. According to Teton Interagency Fire, there have been 26 unattended campfires discovered this summer so far.
To determine fire danger fire crews look at two things: reports from seven Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) scattered in the forest and fuel moisture. Learn more about the science behind fire danger ratings and regulations here.
