JACKSON, Wyo. — Ever actually sprayed bear spray? If the answer is “no,” it might be a good idea to practice with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD).
On Saturday, Sept. 5, WGFD will host a bear spray giveaway and training event at the National Elk Refuge and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center at 532 N. Cache Street. The training event will begin at 10 a.m. WGFD has partnered with Safari Club International Foundation, Defend Outdoors, American Bear Foundation and Shoshone National Forest to provide free bear spray and training to the public.
“These partnership events are a great opportunity for the public to gain experience and become proficient in using bear spray, while also promoting safety, as many gear up for the fall recreation and hunting season,” Bear Wise Wyoming Coordinator Mark Aughton said in a statement. “We hope to increase awareness and encourage those enjoying activities in bear country to be well prepared.”
A remote-controlled bear will simulate a sudden encounter situation, charging at folks while they take turns spraying inert training spray. The “robo bear” tops out at about 20 mph, while a real charging bear can reach speeds of 30 mph or more. WGFD and U.S. Forest Service biologists will be on site to discuss bear ecology, conservation and Bear Wise Wyoming guidelines.
Quantities of bear spray are limited to 100 cans and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
