JACKSON, Wyo. — A hungry little bear finds itself in a precarious situation while reaching for higher branches in an unstable tree.
The black bear is in search of leaves and berries as it bulks up for winter. While black bears eat both plants and animals, most of their diet consists of berries, fruit, sedges and insects, according to the National Park Service (NPS). They will also consume fish and honeycomb. Occasionally, a black bear will take over an elk or deer carcass that was killed by another predator such as a mountain lion.
Black bears are typically solitary creatures, except during mating season, which happens during the summer. They build winter dens beneath fallen trees, in hollowed logs and within other protective shelters, per the NPS.
Never approach a bear. All bears are wild and unpredictable. Follow tips for recreating in bear country, and always try to stay 100 yards away from a bear in the wild.
