WYOMING — The Wyoming Association of School Administrators (WASA) support Governor Gordon’s veto of HB125, which would repeal gun free zones.
With the veto of the bill, state, county and town governments can regulate or ban concealed firearms in public spaces, including schools and hospitals.
“Our members have indicated overwhelmingly support for this decision,” WASA said in the announcement. “We are not an anti-Second Amendment organization. Our members are frequently engaged in a manner of firearms shooting activities and several have conceal carry permits. Some school districts offer hunter safety classes in the classroom. Other districts offer shooting sports and ROTC.”
According to the release, Wyoming School Administrators insist that the current Wyoming Statutes already in place adequately allow boards to make safe decisions regarding firearms on school property.
They also stated in the release that school districts and boards weigh issues by garnering feedback from the local community members, businesses, parents, staff and local law enforcement. Some boards have chosen to pass a policy/procedure to allow certain staff members, who are trained and have been through a rigorous screening process, to carry in schools, according to WASA.
