WILSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) reminds winter recreationalists to be cautious of skiing near WY22 on Teton Pass. Skier-triggered snow slides could potentially endanger highway drivers as well as themselves.
“Conditions can change rapidly and it doesn’t take much snow movement to affect the highway operations. Very slick running surfaces can be found above the highway at this time which can contribute to avalanche hazard in areas that are not normal. Please evaluate your terrain selection very carefully,” WYDOT Avalanche Supervisor Don Lawless said in a press release from WYDOT.
The WYDOT press release was shared with Buckrail on Dec 7, shortly after Teton Backcountry Alliance shared a Facebook post regarding a preliminary report of a skier-triggered avalanche in the area of Twin Slides below Glory summit. The post stated that the slide deposited snow onto WY22.
Details of an avalanche event in this area of Teton Pass had not been recorded under observations on Bridger Teton Avalanche Center at the time of publishing. Teton Pass is currently open in both directions.
