JACKSON, Wyo. — As spring temperatures begin to top 60°F, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) reminds Wyomingites to keep children safe from overheating in the car.

The temperature inside a closed car can reach dangerous levels for children and pets even on mild days, and can be fatal within minutes or hours. According to Consumer Reports, a car’s interior temperature can reach more than 105°F in an hour, even when it’s only 61°F outside.

On Wednesday, June 5, WYDOT shared on Facebook its slogan to help prevent child hot car deaths: “Once you park, stop. Look. Lock.”

Here are some tips from WYDOT to keep children safe during hot months:

  • Never leave a child alone in a car — not even during a quick errand.
  • Keep car doors and trunks locked so children cannot climb in on their own.
  • Create reminders. Place personal items in the backseat.
  • Take action. See a child alone in a car? Call 911.
