WILSON, Wyo. — A multi-vehicle accident closed WY22 in both directions just past noon on Tuesday. Latest estimates indicate the road will reopen between 7 and 9 p.m.
Two people were killed in the incident, which resulted in an overturned dump truck and multiple disabled passenger vehicles, according to an afternoon update by Teton County. The truck spilled asphalt down the highway from the crash site, which was just uphill of the Wilson gates. Four additional people were injured in the crash, and were transported via ambulance to St. John’s.
“This was a complex and tragic incident,” said Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Incident Commander Chris Stiehl. “Our deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we wish a full and speedy recovery to those who were injured. We are grateful for the professionalism and coordinated efforts of all the agencies that responded.”
Wyoming Highway Patrol was investigating the cause of the crash as of publication time, and “recovery and hazardous materials response personnel” were also still on the scene, per the County.
“Motorists should avoid the area until the road reopens to allow responders to complete the investigation and safely clear the roadway,” the update reads. Teton County Emergency Management advised that cars should not line up at the base of Teton Pass, as this could delay the opening of the highway.
The multi-agency emergency response was a collaboration among Air Idaho, Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, Jackson Police Department, St. John’s Health, Teton County Coroner’s Office, Teton County Emergency Management, Teton County Sheriff’s Office, and Wyoming Highway Patrol.
