WILSON, Wyo. — On May 21, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) shared that it has placed new signage along Togwotee Pass reminding travelers to keep moving when bears are visible from the highway.

“For safety’s sake, please keep moving over Togwotee Pass (US26/287),” WYDOT said via Facebook. “Enjoy the wildlife, but do not block the highway.”

Local and statewide wildlife agencies issued a joint press release in April urging bear-watchers to change their behavior on Togwotee Pass following “significant bear jams and poor wildlife viewing ethics” observed this spring.

Bear Wise warns that impeding a bear’s ability to move freely can lead to conflicts including vehicle strikes and other dangerous human-bear conflicts. Habituating bears to human presence and road traffic puts both humans and bears in danger.
