JACKSON, Wyo. — June 14 is World Blood Donor Day, a day to raise awareness for a safe and readily available blood supply and to celebrate blood donors.
Today, World Health Organization is calling on people around the world to donate blood, calling it a gesture of solidarity.
“Safe blood and blood products and their transfusion are a critical aspect of care and public health. They are key in treating people suffering from a range of diseases and as a result of accidents, natural disasters and armed conflict,” says WHO. “The need for blood is universal, but access to it is limited – especially in low- and middle-income countries, where shortages particularly impact women and children as these tend to be the people who need blood most.”
According to WHO, becoming a regular voluntary blood donor is a simple but selfless step that everyone can take to strengthen their communities, support local health systems and save lives.
Locally, those eligible to donate blood have two opportunities next week on Wednesday and Thursday, June 22 and 23. Vitalant is hosting a blood drive at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church.
Appointments are available Wednesday from 12 to 5:45 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
