JACKSON, Wyo. — The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Riverton, Wy., has issued a winter storm watch for western Wyoming, in effect from Tuesday morning, Jan. 9, through Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 10.
NWS forecasts that the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains along with the Salt River and Wyoming ranges could see total snow accumulations of 10 to 18 inches, with potential wind gusts as high as 50 mph. Snowfall is expected to be most intense Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Similar conditions are expected in eastern Idaho.
The snowy weather is likely to impact motorists over mountain passes and beyond, NWS said.
“Travel could be very difficult over Teton Pass, Togwotee Pass and Salt River Pass, as well as in the backcountry,” the alert said. “Blowing and drifting snow may significantly reduce visibility.”
Outdoor users will also want to take extra precautions.
“Cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes,” NWS said.
NWS advises monitoring the forecast for further updates. See https://www.weather.gov/riw/ for more.
