JACKSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) will hold a series of public meetings regarding the future of the Sublette antelope migration corridor this month, including one in Jackson, the agency has announced.
Meetings will be attended by regional wildlife biologists and game wardens seeking public input on the proposed migration corridor, with events planned in Pinedale on Nov. 16, Green River on Nov. 29 and Jackson on Nov. 30.
“The meetings are an opportunity for the public and stakeholders to be directly involved in discussions about migrations in Wyoming,” WGFD Deputy Chief of Wildlife Doug Brimeyer, said via press release. “Local information and knowledge is key to understanding antelope movement and is essential in the review process of the draft map.”
WGFD has been collecting GPS data from more than 415 collared antelope, tracking their 360-mile round-trip migration patterns from summers spent around Jackson, Bondurant and the Wyoming Range to winter ranges near Pinedale, Green River and Rock Springs.
The proposed migration corridor is open to public comment through Jan. 5, 2024. Comments can be submitted via this online form. The feedback will be presented to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission ahead of its next meeting, tentatively scheduled for March 2024 in Pinedale.
“Moving forward in the process is an important step in managing vital antelope habitat in western Wyoming,” Brimeyer said. “With the identification of the corridor, additional funding opportunities become available for conservation based projects on private and public lands to treat invasive annual grasses, improve range fences to wildlife-friendly standards and other proactive management actions.”
The Jackson meeting will be held on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Teton County Library’s Ordway Auditorium.
