DUBOIS, Wyo. — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) is asking the public for information after a recent incident of “artifact looting and vandalism” near Wyoming Game and Fish Commission lands near Dubois.

The WGFD press release did not reveal the specifics of the incident. Commission lands hold cultural and historical resources from Wyoming’s past, and when artifacts are illegally removed or destroyed by individuals, the damage can be permanent. Lands managed by the Commission aim to conserve wildlife habitat and provide public opportunities for recreation, hunting and fishing.

“Looting not only strips the land of irreplaceable history, it jeopardizes the privilege of public access to these areas for everyone,” Lander Regional Wildlife Supervisor Jason Hunter said via press release. “These lands are owned by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission and are open to unlimited public access for much of the year.  It is the Department’s responsibility to safeguard them for future generations.”

An anonymous donor is offering a $10,000 reward for anyone with information that results in a conviction. People with information are encouraged to call the Stop Poaching Hotline at (877) WGFD-TIP (943-3847) or report online. According to WGFD, tips can be made anonymously.

“Game and Fish thanks the public for being vigilant and reporting misuse on Commission-owned lands,” reads the statement.
