JACKSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) has issued a reminder to the public that recovering road-killed animals requires authorization from the agency.
Those who are interested in salvaging wildlife after an unintentional vehicle collision can do so after prior approval from WGFD through the Wyoming 511 app. Authorization can be completed through the app, even without cell service. The public can request approval to salvage deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, wild bison and turkey.
According to the WGFD announcement, picking up carcasses on interstates 25, 80 and 90 is prohibited due to safety concerns. Collecting roadkill in construction areas and within national parks is also not permitted.
After authorization, anyone salvaging roadkill must adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Only salvage from a public road or highway, between sunrise and sunset.
- Park fully off the road and use emergency flashers.
- No field dressing of any kind is permitted on the roadway.
- The entire animal must be taken, and inedible portions must be properly disposed of in an approved landfill.
To request authorization on the Wyoming 511 app, use the “Report Roadkill” button on the homescreen. The user can request approval if the species is available for collection in an approved location. The app will send a certificate upon completing a questionnaire. Users must have or create an account with WGFD to access authorization. Learn more here.
