WYOMING — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) has proposed an additional sheep tag for the Teton Bighorn Sheep Herd, one for residents and one for nonresidents. This is one more than the current allotment, which is one available tag.

According to WGFD, drawing odds in the random draw are typically less than one percent.

Hunting bighorn sheep is different from most other big game hunting since a majority of bighorn sheep occupy remote areas within designated wilderness areas that are logistically more difficult and physically demanding to navigate. Nonresidents who draw a bighorn sheep license should anticipate hunting with a guide.

The Teton Bighorn Sheep Herd falls under Hunt Area 6, outside of Grand Teton National Park. The small, isolated population is currently at risk of local extinction in the Teton Range due to human activities and development.

The WGFD Commission will meet today, April 17, and tomorrow, April 18, in person and online to make final decisions on hunting seasons. Hunting licenses are reviewed annually and can be changed based on survey data, harvest data and public input each year. License sales and fees make up a large majority of the WGFD revenue, and nonresidents fund a majority of that license revenue.
