CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) announced recent elk season changes for nonresident elk hunters in 2024.

The new year signals the opening of hunting applications for many hunters and at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, the WGFD will open applications for six big game species and wild turkey. Nonresident applicants should be aware to the new changes to the nonresident general elk season structure.

In July 2023, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission approved changes to Ch. 44, Regulation for Issuance of Licenses, Permits, Stamps, Tags, Preference Points and Competitive Raffle Chance. The approved changes established three nonresident region general elk hunt areas (Regions W, E and S) and general elk license quotas.

According to WGFD, opening dates, closing dates and limitations for big game hunting seasons are established each year in late April or early May. The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission may not issue licenses for specific hunt areas and types based on wildlife management. Applicants who select hunt areas or types for which licenses are not authorized will have their license fee, but not their application fee, refunded.

The nonresident elk application deadline is Jan. 31. Nonresident application deadlines and information on individual hunt areas can be seen here.
