CALIFORNIA — An owl joined a Wyoming-based helicopter crew mid-flight last week while they worked to control the Creek Fire, raging in Sierra National Forest, California.

The curious owl flew into the helicopter and joined the pilot, Dan Alpiner while he made several water drops on the fire. Based out of Worland, Wyoming, the charter helicopter company, Sky Aviation has been helping fight the Creek Fire in Freson and Madera Counties.

According to Alyssa Gaulke, the office manager at Sky Aviation, “the owl flew in a 16×16 window while the helicopter was in flight.” The pilot was initially startled by the new passenger but when it was clear the owl was along for the ride, Alpiner said, “Let’s get to work.” Alpiner managed to snap a quick photo of his new co-pilot while he continued to fight the Creek fire.

Alpiner and the owl completed several water drop rotations before the owl went on his way. “he was probably in the helicopter for about 15-20 minutes” said Gaulke.

When the owl decided his ride was over left, he just as he had entered, through the small open window. According to Teton Raptor Center, this owl is a Western Screech Owl. “It’s truly a once in a lifetime happening,” said Gaulke.
