JACKSON, Wyo. — Get out and vote, Teton County!
Today is the day to cast a vote in the primary election, possible at five polling sites (open until 7 p.m.) across the county. Buckrail reporters posted up at the Teton County Library, the Teton County/Jackson Community Recreation Center and the Old Wilson Schoolhouse Community Center to ask voters about the issues on their minds. Some quick hits:
- “It’s the inequity between wealth and poverty, basically,” Anne Muller said, adding, “I just don’t like the separation of haves and have-nots.”
- “I pay attention to those that are in support of public lands,” Frank Yankee said.
- “I am really pleased there is someone from Alta this year,” Kathi Martin said, presumably referring to County Commission candidate Ali Dunford. “I think we need representation over there.”
- “I think a lot of it is wages, employment and housing,” Susie Breen said. “It is way out of whack. It’s not so much that we don’t have the housing, as people cannot afford it, and that’s the big thing. And they’re still only getting paid the minimum, or a little above the minimum. These young ladies that have children and have to work three jobs to just be able to live in a home, that’s ridiculous in Teton County. It’s ridiculous.”
- “Real estate taxes and views on United States borders,” Ron Lucas said.
- Emily Novak noted her top issues were housing and green space. She added: “The queer community is growing, as are other communities, and I’d like to see them stay.”
- “I guess the main [issue] is the impact of growth on the valley,” Susan McGuire said.
Local candidates were out shaking hands, hoisting signs and waving at potential constituents. County Commission candidates Dunford, Karyn Chin and Wes Gardner were spotted canvassing from street corners in town. U.S. House of Representatives candidate Steve Friess made an appearance at the Wilson polls.
