JACKSON, Wyo. — It’s looking like another sweltering weekend on the valley floor.
Jackson Hole is listed in the National Weather Service’s (NWS) heat advisory covering parts of Wyoming, in effect from noon on Saturday until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
“Very hot temperatures expected this weekend,” NWS advised. “Highs from 98 to 105 below 5500 feet, 90 to 98 above 5500 feet. … Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Some locations will not see temperatures fall below 90 degrees until sunset.”
Be on the lookout for signs of heat-related illnesses. Populations most vulnerable to heat risks include older adults, young children, outdoor workers, recreationists, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those without access to adequate cooling.
Teton County Emergency Management recommends taking the following protective actions in a major heat wave:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Wear light-colored clothing.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room or visit a public building with air conditioning.
- Stay out of the sun and limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
- Put extra water in personal vehicles.
- Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
- Keep personal vehicle gas tanks above half-full. Running vehicle air conditioning can use a lot of fuel.
- Know and recognize the signs of heat-related illness. These can include dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea, weakness, confusion, and even becoming unconscious.
- Check up on relatives and neighbors.
