JACKSON, Wyo. — Still holding onto a Christmas tree? Now’s the time to act.

The valley’s residential Christmas tree collection program, dubbed “Don’t Trash Your Tree; Compost it for Free,” wraps up on Jan. 31 at the Jackson Rodeo Grounds. After that, trees must be taken to the Teton County Trash Transfer Station and will incur a standard disposal fee.

With the support of Terra Firma Organics, participating in the tree composting program gives trees a second life as nutrient-rich compost and mulch when processed through the tree composting program. Composting trees helps reduce landfill waste and supports sustainable practices in Jackson Hole.

Here’s how to participate before time runs out:

  1. Remove decorations: Be sure to strip all ornaments, lights, tinsel and stands.
  2. Drop it off: Bring clean trees to the designated spot at the Rodeo Grounds or the Trash Transfer Station by Friday, Jan. 31.

Instead of being trucked to a landfill 100 miles away in Idaho, trees are chipped and composted into a valuable resource. This sustainable approach is made possible by a partnership between Terra Firma Organics, the Town of Jackson and Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling’s Road to Zero Waste program.
