JACKSON, Wyo. — On Monday, April 15, Mayor Morton Levinson recognized April 2024 as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, and called upon all residents, community agencies, medical facilities and elected leaders to increase their participation in efforts to support families in preventing child abuse.
Every April, Jackson’s youth advocacy groups join together in an effort to prevent abuse and neglect through outreach, education and intervention. An estimated 1,000 children in Wyoming are victims of abuse and neglect each year, according to the Town of Jackson.
“Victims of child abuse and neglect are known to be at higher risk for experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, low academic achievement, drug use, juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy and adult criminality,” the Mayor’s proclamation states. “Every child is precious and deserves to grow up in a healthy, safe, nurturing environment free from the harmful effects of abuse and neglect.”
To make a report concerning abuse or neglect, contact the Wyoming Department of Family Services county field office where the alleged abuse or neglect took/is taking place. A listing of all county office addresses and phone numbers can be found here. If it is an emergency, dial 911 and contact law enforcement first.
