SUBLETTE COUNTY, WYO – The morning update on the Roosevelt Fire shows continued growth from yesterday. The fire is now at an estimated 34,411 acres.
Three structures have been lost to the fire, according to the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office. Two main residences in Hoback Ranches and one guest home in that same subdivision.
“We lost the guest house but we were able to save the main house so far,” said Sgt. Travis Bingham with the SCSO.
Incident Commander Jeff Knudson has ordered more resources for the fire. As always, a nationwide competition for available firefighting assets limits what each incident can get. There are some 32 wildfires burning in the US.
As of this morning, there are seven helicopters working the fire. All fixed-wing aircraft including VLATs, heavy tankers, and scoopers are assisting on other fires today unless needed on the Roosevelt due to scheduled backburns on the ground.Ten crews totaling 420 personnel are assigned with 11 engines and 4 dozers.
Yesterday at a glance
Fire activity was at the head and flanks, primarily related to shifting winds causing torching and spotting in various directions. Fire growth pushed the fire towards South Beaver Creek and Strawberry Ridge. As a result, Jim Bridger Subdivision was evacuated. Those windy conditions in the late morning and afternoon prompted single tree, group torching and occasional crown runs.
Overall, the fire exhibited advanced spread rates and flame lengths.
Firefighter and public safety is the primary concern in the full-suppression mission to contain the fire. Direct-attack suppression tactics and structure protection in affected communities continue being utilized. Dozers are being used to plow containment lines. Resources continue to arrive to assist existing the fire personnel.
Today’s attack
Keep the fire out of subdivisions will be the name of the game today.
Construction of direct line by crews and dozers will continue in order to try to prevent the fire from moving closer to the Jim Bridger and Rolling Thunder subdivisions or further into the Hoback Ranches subdivision.
Structure protection groups will continue point protection and to create defendable space in the subdivisions and plan for evacuation of the subdivision on the northeast side of US 189/191. Air resources will continue to support defense of structures and line construction efforts.
