TETON VILLAGE, Wyo. — Buzzed-out guitars and a trademark menace, garage rockers The Black Lips have been at it since 1999, where they formed in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s tenth studio effort, Apocalypse Love, is described on their Bandcamp page as “cryogenically mutating all recognized musical bases; it spins yarns about vintage Soviet synths, Benzedrine stupors, coup de’ tats, stolen valor and certified destruction, all set against a black setting sun.” Get the full experience for yourself when they take the stage this Saturday at the Mangy Moose.
Pop-punk melodies and deceptively soulful, intelligent songwriting is often overshadowed by The Black Lips’ wild and sometimes ramshackle performances. All this combined with a honky tonk Southern flavor and even a hip-hop tinge, and you’ve got one of the Peach State’s most distinct bands.
Local alt- and punk-rock band Box Elder will open the show. They’ve been carving their own scene in a town that’s not conducive to punk rock, at least in terms of venues to perform in, but persistence has its returns and they’re making a mark. The five-piece has released two EPs—These Distractions are Constant (2021) and Minimums (2022)—and will hit the road this spring for a dozen dates through the northwest.
Ox Presents The Black Lips with special guest Box Elder, 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mangy Moose in Teton Village. $29. MangyMoose.com.
