DRIGGS, Idaho — The slow start to winter has been a bit of a rollercoaster this season, exemplified by a record-setting Saturday over in Teton Valley.

Teton Valley Weather reported that sunny conditions over New Year’s weekend pushed temperatures higher than they had been on the date in more than a century.

“On this day in 1917, Driggs reached a high temperature of 48 degrees F, setting a daily heat record that stood for 106 years,” reads Teton Valley Weather’s Facebook post from Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, accompanied by a photo of sunny blue skies. “That record was broken today at 2 p.m., when the mercury reached 49 F at the airport in Driggs.”

According to records by the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures at Driggs-Reed Memorial Airport reached 50° by 1:45 p.m. on Saturday and lingered in the high 40s while the sun was out. Per the NWS records, the average temperature in Driggs for Dec. 30 historically is 17.2°.

In Jackson, Saturday afternoon was not quite as warm, with temperatures at the Jackson Hole Airport topping out at 30° around 2:20 p.m. The NWS reports that the average temperature in Jackson for Dec. 30 historically is 14.4°.
