ALPINE, Wyo. — The Caribou-Targhee National Forest Palisades Ranger District recently issued a special use permit for 30 boat slips on the Palisades Reservoir from Memorial Day weekend through Sept. 30.
The one-year permit was issued to the Palisades Marina, located a the Calamity Campground, on the south shore of the Palisades Reservoir.
According to Caribou-Targhee, the need for a public marina has increased as the use and congestion at boat ramps and docks continue to accelerate at an alarming rate.
“We know there is an interest for this service,” said Tracy Hollingshead, Palisades District Ranger. “This seasonal trial period will let us gauge that interest and determine if this use is appropriate and compatible for the site.”
Palisades Marina will open up 25 of the slips for season-long docking through a lottery on May 1. The remaining five slips will be for short-term docking on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to the Palisades Marina website, “the random drawing will be conducted in cooperation with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest staff, ensuring complete fairness in drawing results.”
The drawing will be conducted on May 15 at 10 a.m. Selected applicants will be notified immediately and will have five days to claim their slip or it will be forfeited to the next randomly drawn applicant.
Each slip is $400 per month. Four “transient or overnight” slips will be available for reservations through the website. These slips have a 14-day maximum stay limit and cost $30 per night.
All slips will be approximately the same size, accommodating boats up to 8’6″ wide and no longer than 28′ long.
If public input is positive and the proposal works, the Forest Service will consider issuing a prospectus to allow interested parties an opportunity to submit a business proposal for a long-term permit.
