JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) shared a warning to its social media channels on Tuesday, alerting locals to a phone scammer who has been posing as a TCSO deputy to target Teton County residents.
“A current scammer is calling Teton County residents about a missed jury duty summons and a warrant of arrest for not appearing,” TCSO said via Facebook. “The scammer is using current Patrol Deputy names and giving the option of coming to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office at 180 S King Street to make payment or making a payment over the phone. This is a scam!”
The sheriff’s office also shared tips for sussing out phone scammers.
“Remember: Phone scammers can be very convincing,” TCSO said in the post. “They use intimidation tactics to scare you into quickly sharing personal and financial information. They will pressure you to send them money through payment apps or gift card numbers.”
The agency reminds the community that TCSO will never contact people by phone or text to collect money or financial information, nor will they ever ask people to pay fines via Venmo, PayPal or gift cards.
Those with questions about a scam call or text should call TCSO dispatch at (307) 733-2331.
