JACKSON, Wyo. — Pothole-dodging might as well be the official spring sport in Jackson.
As of this week, spring weight limit restrictions are in effect on Spring Gulch Road and other roads managed by Teton County in order to reduce damage to roads as freeze/thaw cycles strain asphalt reliability. The county’s Road and Levee department singled out the damage to Spring Gulch in its announcement of the restrictions, so Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer went to check it out.
Department Supervisor David Gustafson said Road and Levee is working to mitigate the dangers for drivers.
“We have signs posted alerting drivers to the road damage,” Gustafson wrote to Buckrail in an email. “Our contractor started patching Spring Gulch potholes today. Road and Levee is monitoring all county-administered roads. Certainly, unprecedented conditions for this early spring thaw.”
Road damage occurs during the spring thaw when heavy vehicles repeatedly drive over cracks in pavement that have been compromised by fluctuations in temperature.
