JACKSON, Wyo. — Beginning Wednesday, March 20, roads managed by Teton County will be subject to weight restrictions to reduce damage to roads under spring weather conditions.

According to Teton County and Wyoming statutes, Teton County’s Road and Levee supervisor may reduce the maximum weights on roads and bridges, if the operation of vehicles at a certain weight would create undue damage to the county roads or county bridges. The Road and Levee Department made the call as warmer weather creeps in, with freeze/thaw cycles leading to road damage and potholes. The department cited “observed pavement failure on Spring Gulch Road” in its announcement of the restrictions.

The maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) allowed on county roads will be 40,000 pounds until further notice. Depending on weather patterns, the limit could remain in effect into the summer. The weight limit reduction has occurred in years past.

Roads subject to this weight limit include Fall Creek Road, Fish Creek Road, downtown Wilson, South Park Loop Road, Boyles Hill Road, Spring Gulch Road, Buffalo Valley Road and Alta Ski Hill Road.

Emergency vehicles and critical services, such as propane delivery and garbage collection, are exempt from this rule. The Teton County Sheriff’s Office will enforce the weight limit.

Hoback Junction South Road remains under the reduced weight limit of 35,000 pounds GVW.

Roads managed by the Town of Jackson and the state of Wyoming are subject to different rules. The Teton Pass, WY22 between Wilson and the Idaho state line, famously restricts GVW to 60,000 pounds (and forbids trailer traffic) from November 15 to April 1.
