JACKSON, Wyo. — Grizzly 399, beloved bear with an international fan club, died on Tuesday night in a vehicle collision south of Jackson.
Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer captured beautiful photos and videos of 399 over the last few years as she and her cubs traveled in and around Grand Teton National Park.
399’s bumper crop of four cubs made for fairytale-like photos.

Considered the great matriarch of the Tetons, Grizzly 399 leaves behind a storied legacy.

“Grizzly bear 399 has been perhaps the most prominent ambassador for the species,” Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins said in the announcement of her death. “She has inspired countless visitors into conservation stewardship around the world and will be missed.”
