JACKSON, Wyo. — Last evening, community members gathered on Jackson’s Town Square to protest and share their support for the Iranian people protesting the Islamic Regime.

Protests broke out across Iran and have spread worldwide in the wake of 22-year-old Masha Amini’s death. Amini was beaten and later fell into a coma and died on Sept. 16, after being arrested by the morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly.

Iranian officials have hindered access to the internet and social media channels like Instagram and WhatsApp, making it harder for Iranian protesters to organize and share information.

Amnesty International says it has identified 52 people killed by security forces in the crackdown between Sept. 19 and Sept. 25, but the death toll is considered to be much higher, into the thousands.

Protesters on the Square chanted, “zan, zendegi, azadi,” a popular Kurdish slogan used in the Kurdish Independence movement, that translates to “women, life, freedom” and has become the rallying cry of protesters in Iran.
