JACKSON, Wyo. — This week’s full “Beaver moon” was the largest supermoon of the year, shining brightly over the valley for several nights in a row. Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer snapped this photo of the moon in all of its glory. Peep the detailed look at the moon’s craters on the right side of the frame.

The supermoon was the muse for photographers across the world all week. Check out this international photo roundup assembled by the BBC.

The nickname is derived in part from the prolific fur trapping era, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac: “This is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient food stores for the long winter ahead. During the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts.”
