JACKSON, Wyo. — On Saturday, the Jackson Hole High School varsity boys soccer team clinched a state championship title with a 2-1 overtime win against No. 2 seed, Thunder Basin.

In the first half of the game, the Broncs were down 0-1 and were struggling to gain momentum against Thunder Basin’s lead. However, in a turnaround during the second half,  senior Leo Harland scored to tie the game at 1-1.

After a lightning delay in the second half, the Broncs pushed the game into overtime in which freshman Teddy Opler’s corner kick scored the winning goal from a poor clearance by the opposing goalie.

With the state championship win, the Broncs end their season with an 18-2 overall record and an 11-1 league record.

“I’m just really proud of the boys, it was a great state tournament for us and to repeat as state champions is just a really special experience for all of us involved,” said head coach, Matt Hoelscher.

Hoelscher explained that the win was particularly special given last season’s cancellation due to the pandemic.

“Probably even more so in light that last year’s season was canceled due to COVID. Just feels really satisfying.”
