JACKSON, Wyo. — With many big game and bird seasons already underway in Jackson Hole, be mindful of hunters while recreating in the backcountry this fall.
On Sept. 21, Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer spotted two hunters walking along the Spring Creek trail in Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF), near Alpine. Many hunters are searching the wooded terrain in BTNF for large game species such as elk and mule deer.

According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), the general elk season in the region runs until Oct. 31. Specific dates and regulations for other species, such as pronghorn, deer and bighorn sheep, vary by hunt area and license type.
All backcountry users, including hikers with dogs, are urged to wear high-visibility clothing and to make their presence known during hunting season. It is also crucial to be aware of bear safety practices and to check the area’s fire restrictions, per the WGFD.

The WGFD has shared the following safety tips for backcountry recreationists:
- Know hunting season dates. Big game seasons for elk, deer and antelope generally run from early September into late November, though specific dates vary by hunt area. Check the WGFD Hunt Planner for details on specific locations.
- Stick to designated trails. Avoid wandering into prime hunting areas by staying on marked trails.
- Make noise. Talking, singing or wearing a bell can help to alert hunters.
- Be cautious at dawn and dusk. Animals are most active during these times, which are also peak hunting hours. Consider hiking during the brighter parts of the day to increase visibility.
- Keep pets leashed. This prevents them from wandering off and helps hunters distinguish them from wildlife. Consider using high-visibility pet accessories.
