JACKSON, Wyo. — The long winter is (s)no(w) problem for the fox, who Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer recently photographed successfully hunting food for her kits on May 5 in Grand Teton National Park (GTNP).

According to the National Park Service (NPS), foxes are nocturnal but females can be more visible during daylight hours in April and May as they forage for their new, growing pups. Pouncing on the snow is a fox’s attempt to get to rodents underneath the surface.

Remember, humans should never feed the foxes. The NPS warns that foxes can become habituated to people if fed, which increases risk of harm for animals and individuals. Feeding wildlife is prohibited in the Town of Jackson and GTNP.
