UPDATE: BTNF shared that the fire was considered contained as of 10:45 a.m.
WILSON, Wyo. — Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) has reported a new wildland fire in the valley. The Ski Fire was discovered in the forest near Ski Lake on the evening of Monday, June 16.
The fire was first estimated to be a half-acre in size, burning in subalpine fir. As of 9 a.m., BTNF’s Mary Cernicek shared with Buckrail that the fire’s size was diminishing and stood at 0.2 acres. Smoke is visible in the valley, but no road or trail closures have been implemented.
Cernicek noted that the fire is surrounded by meadow with a “low spread probability.”
BTNF asks that people avoid the Ski Lake Trailhead and the Philips Ridge area while firefighters are handling the blaze. Crews began suppression action Monday night, including the use of a helicopter.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Fire danger on BTNF is considered “moderate,” indicating that fires can start from accidental causes including unattended campfires.
BTNF is also handling the Horse Fire over on the Big Piney Ranger District, a lightning-caused blaze discovered on Friday, June 13.
