JACKSON, Wyo. — Organizers of the annual Shrine Bowl say the 47th celebration of the high school all-star football that acts as a fundraiser for Shriners Hospital has been cancelled.

Executive director Frank Selby cited health risks associated with the coronavirus to players and fans. He also acknowledged many small businesses that would normally contribute to the game’s fundraising aspect are likely hampered by the current economic conditions caused by the outbreak and resulting restrictions.

“The overall wellbeing of our communities remains on the forefront of our minds as we weather these uncertain times,” Selby said. “This game is made possible not only by our athletes but also by the generosity of local businesses and families that pledge support year after year. In addition to potential risks that linger as game time nears, we cannot in good conscience ask for financial support from communities as they are left reeling in economic effects associated with the outbreak.”

The annual football game began in 1973 when two Wyoming High School football coaches—Jerry Overton of Kelly Walsh High School and Denny Brown of Byron High School—organized an all-star football game with rosters being made up of Wyoming high school players who were graduates of the current year. The Shrine Bowl has raised more than $450,000 since then.

The 2020 game was to have been played June 13 at Cheney Alum Field in Casper.

“I sincerely apologize for the disappointment this brings to our participants and football fans,” Selby said. “As executive director, I continue to work closely with the Board of Directors and Both Shrine Temples in Wyoming. Our focus at this time is to ensure that the players, coaches and participants are justly recognized for their achievements and the commitment that brought us together.”

Selby assured that any monies sent from businesses and player/participant families to Wyoming Shrine Bowl for game tickets, banquet tickets, program ads and sponsorships will be returned within 30 days. These checks will not be deposited, he said.

Next year’s game is scheduled for June 12, 2021 at the Natrona County High School’s Dick Cheney Alumni Field in Casper.

Jackson lineman Kevin Flores was to have participated for the North in this year’s game. Players across the state are divided into teams representing North and South. North currenty has a 25-18-3 lead in the series.
