Grammy recognized instrumentalists Shawn Lane and Richard Bennett at Silver Dollar

JACKSON, Wyo. — The pickin’ is focused, the performances uncluttered, and an undertone of deliberate calmness radiates from their songs. A duo of top-notch instrumentalists—Shawn Lane and Richard Bennettfrom respective legendary bluegrass outfits Blue Highway and J.D. Crowe & The New South will take stage this Friday and Saturday at the Silver Dollar Showroom. Lane and Bennett teamed up just a couple of years ago to co-write and perform, releasing a 2018 debut EP, Land & Harbor, and playing their debut show together in 2019.

Prior to becoming a founding member of Blue Highway in 1994, Lane played with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder. His time with Blue Highway yielded three Grammy nominations and 28 IBMA Awards as a vocalist and a triple on fiddle, mandolin and guitar.  As a songwriter, Lane was nominated as 2015 IBMA Songwriter of the Year, penning such respected songs as “The Game,” “Sycamore Hollow,” and “Tears Fell on Missouri.”

As for East Tennessee native, Bennett, he began his musical odyssey touring with former Flatt & Scruggs fiddle player Benny Sims. Gigs at Dollywood followed, with his big break coming in the ‘90s when he joined the legendary J.D. Crowe & The New South. Bennett appeared on Crowe’s 1995 album, Flashback, which was nominated for two Grammy Awards. He went on to tour with greats like Bobby Osbourne, Mike Auldridge, and Jimmy Gaudreau. Richard also released several solo and trio albums on Lonesome Day and Pinecastle Records.

Together, the understated duo states that their sound that has “a more folk and jam feel” than their respective primary bands. On their debut release, this translates to extended flatpicking breaks, individualized vocals, and a contemporary Southern bluegrass aesthetic that can also be heard through Blue Highway’s discography.

Shawn Lane and Richard Bennett, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Silver Dollar Showroom. Free with limited seating.
