JACKSON, Wyo. — It’s that time of year again: Seasonal closures to protect migrating wildlife will begin on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The five-mile segment of the pathway along US89 stretching between Flat Creek and the Gros Ventre River will be closed through April 30 in order to reduce impacts on migrating elk and other wildlife that winter on the National Elk Refuge, Teton County announced this week.

Refuge officials remind the public that crossing over the pathway to approach the Refuge fence for photographs or wildlife viewing is still a breach of the pathway closure. The presence of humans at or near the fence often causes nearby elk to bolt and leave the area, the Refuge shared previously. Disturbances throughout the winter have a cumulative effect, adding to an animal’s weakened condition brought about by the rigors of the harsh season.

The US89 pathway schedule coincides with other closures, including Teton Park Road and Moose-Wilson Road (from Death Canyon Road to Granite Canyon Trailhead). On Dec. 1, additional winter wildlife closures will go into effect on local public lands, and the Wilson Boat Ramp will close to motorized vehicles.

“Residents and visitors are encouraged to review winter wildlife closure details at tetonconservation.org/winter-wildlife-closures,” Teton County shared via press release. “Officials urge the public to respect these boundaries and avoid accessing closed areas with pets or engaging in unauthorized winter recreation.”
