JACKSON, Wyo. — The National Weather Service’s Riverton, WY, office (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning affecting Teton County along with several other counties in Wyoming, meaning critical fire weather conditions are imminent.
Fremont, Park, Lincoln and Sublette counties are also affected, in addition to counties in the eastern and central parts of the state. The warning is in effect from noon through 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
According to NWS, low humidities combined with unseasonably warm temperatures and strong, gusty winds could cause erratic fire behavior. Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, per the warning.
“Burning of any kind is highly discouraged!” NWS posted to its website on Wednesday.
Those in areas that fall under the warning should avoid starting fires if possible. If not, make sure fires are lit in a safe area where sparks can’t spread to nearby fuels, and ensure fires are out and cold before leaving them. Follow tips for staying fire safe.
This weather could adversely affect the twin wildfires burning on Bridger-Teton National Forest: the Fish Creek Fire and the Pack Trail Fire. On Tuesday, the Forest Service noted that the Fish Creek Fire had reached the size of 25,325 acres and Pack Trail Fire had reached 18,525 acres. Stay tuned for further updates.
